WhereOnEarth

London based technology business sold to Yahoo! in 2005
In 1999, WhereOnEarth’s (WOE) key assets were a digital map of the world and a zip code database for all countries used mostly for local Government work. Over the next 6 years, the company transformed itself into a mobile location based services company providing, for example, all mapping for the “3” mobile network in multiple countries including the UK. When internet search revenues dramatically increased, WOE entered the market to make searches and the ads themselves more geographically relevant. WOE worked closely with Yahoo! in developing the product which eventually led to Yahoo! acquiring the company in 2005 for an undisclosed amount.
